3 Chiefs who clinched a roster spot in second preseason game
Wide receiver Daurice Fountain
Like Fortson, Daurice Fountain has spent the first couple of years of his career on the roster cuts rollercoaster. He was drafted by the Colts in 2018, but yo-yo’d back and forth between practice squad and active roster. Injuries hindered his chance of changing that. He signed with Kansas City this spring with an eye on challenging for a more permanent role.
Making the Chiefs roster was far from a sure thing when Fountain joined up. Now it looks like he’s more than worthy of landing a spot.
Against the Cardinals, Fountain had three catches for 54 yards, including a 41-yard catch along the sideline. Pro Football Focus graded him as one of the Chiefs top-rated offensive players in the game, per Sam Hays. That’s on the back of his four-catch, 38-yard outing against the 49ers in Week 1.
The only thing a fringe player can do in the preseason is make it very hard for a team to cut them. That’s what Fountain has done. He’s outperforming the competition and giving himself a chance.
