3 Chiefs who clinched a roster spot in second preseason game
Running back Darwin Thompson
Darwin Thompson has made the Chiefs roster each year since being drafted in the sixth round in 2019. However, his roster security has been seriously in question recently.
Thompson opened training camp on the COVID-19 list, missing valuable time on the practice field. He didn’t help his case at all when he managed just 12 yards on four carries in the first preseason game against the 49ers. He had more penalty yards than rushing yards after picking up a personal foul for headbutting an opponent.
Friday’s performance in Arizona came at the perfect time to give him some breathing room. He had eight carries for 49 yards with a 6.1 yards per carry average. He also caught two passes for seven yards. A 37-yard kick return on special teams was a cherry on top of the performance.
Fortunate favored him as an injury to Darrel Williams opened the door for him to see more action than he would have otherwise.
Thompson has talent. He just needs to show it reliably in every aspect of the game. His outing against the Cardinals was an example of what he can give.
