Vikings free agency, Golden Tate

1. Golden Tate

Tate is arguably the most accomplished veteran wideout still available in free agency. He may never live up to the superstar potential that accompanied him out of his collegiate days at Notre Dame. That doesn’t diminish from the fact that he’s been a solid pro during the vast majority of his NFL career.

In many ways, Tate can provide Minnesota perfect protection against a potential injury to either Thielen or Jefferson. He’s effectively a lesser version of either player at this stage of his career. Even so, his versatility can really help ease potential injury concerns inside the Vikings locker room.

The outstanding question about Tate’s free agency is just how much guaranteed money it’s going to take him to get into camp. It’s very possible that Tate is just waiting until the regular season to find a landing spot. Minnesota officials shouldn’t worry too much about getting him into camp immediately. He’s got a solid knowledge of NFL route trees that should help him adjust to the team’s system quickly.

Tate is the best chance the Vikings have to acquire an above-average wide receiver on a cheap deal at this late juncture of free agency. Minnesota fans should keep a very close eye on his status over the coming days.
