3 teams who should trade for Broncos QB Drew Lock
2. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons resisted the temptation to take their quarterback of the future fourth overall in April’s draft, instead taking tight end Kyle Pitts to add a weapon for Matt Ryan. For at least this year, new head coach Arthur Smith will be tasked with getting the most out of the former MVP signal caller.
After veteran backup A.J. McCarron suffered a torn ACL, the Falcons recently added former first-round pick Josh Rosen to their quarterback room. Undrafted rookie Feleipe Franks is on the depth chart too.
Ryan has missed one game over the last 11 seasons, and just three games in his 13 seasons. So he’s not a serious durability concern. The bigger concern, though he’d be in no serious danger of being benched, would be his play starting to really erode in his age-36 season this year. The departure of Julio Jones, and his career splits when he didn’t have Jones available, invites the idea his play will crater quickly. But Ryan was without Jones a big chunk of last year, and didn’t play that badly (286 yards per game).
In any case, the Falcons need to think about who will succeed Ryan under center. Lock is a solid flier to consider, and he’d surely benefit from working behind Ryan as well as with Smith, who fostered Ryan Tannehill’s career resurrection as the offensive coordinator in Tennessee.
