While it’s no surprise, the Houston Texans have officially named Tyrod Taylor their starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It’s now official. Tyrod Taylor will be under center for the Houston Texans.

Taylor, 32, is getting another shot at starting with the announcement from Texnns head coach David Culley during Monday’s press conference. Houston is benching quarterback Deshaun Watson, who had one of the uglier offseasons in NFL history.

The winter began with Watson’s camp putting out a trade request and continued in heinous fashion as 22 civil suits were brought against him for alleged sexual assault. The team has decided to give the veteran Taylor a chance over third-round rookie Davis Mills, signaling Watson’s move to the bench is likely for quite some time.

Taylor spent last season with the Los Angeles Chargers and started Week 1 before being injured the following Sunday when a team doctor punctured his lung during a pain-killing injection. Justin Herbert took over, and Taylor never got his job back.

Prior to his stint in Los Angeles, Taylor spend his first four NFL campaigns with the Baltimore Ravens as a backup to Joe Flacco before getting his chance with the Buffalo Bills in 2015, when he earned his first Pro Bowl nod. Taylor played three seasons in western New York before one year with the Cleveland Browns. In 2019, Taylor joined the Chargers as a backup to Philip Rivers.

For his career, Taylor has thrown for 9,770 yards with 54 touchdowns and 20 touchdowns, while posting a 24-21-1 record.
