3. David Montgomery, RB, Chicago Bears

David Montgomery enjoyed a career year last year, rushing 247 times for 1,070 yards and eight touchdowns, while finishing as the RB4 in PPR leagues. Fantasy footballers likely didn’t see that finish coming, but it’s what the Bears expected of Montgomery when they drafted him in 2019.

This offseason, he’s been touted as an even bigger breakout by Bears’ coach Matt Nagy, who’s repeatedly said he wanted Montgomery to have 20-plus carries a game in 2021.

20 carries per game over a 17-game season would put Montgomery at 340 carries. That amount of volume is first-round worthy in fantasy leagues. Players getting him at his third-round ADP could have a solid return.

The Bears signed former Chiefs running back Damien Williams in the offseason. While he isn’t going to be a major threat to Montgomery’s workload, he could prove to be a more complete and formidable backup than incumbent Tarik Cohen, who’s still on the Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP).

In Montgomery’s final six games of 2020, he went on an absolute tear. Totaling 116 carries for 598 yards and seven touchdowns. That’s an average of 19 carries and almost 100 yards per game.

If Montgomery continues on with that dominant stretch, he will provide first-round upside at a third round cost. That is hard to come by in fantasy football and could take your team to the top.
