Tyler Lockett made a touchdown catch that seems impossible (Video)
Clutch Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett makes his first game-changing play of 2021 with an impossible 23-yard touchdown grab.
Seahawks wide receivers have long had the unfortunate reputation of being undervalued — just ask Doug Baldwin — but chronically-underrated wideout Tyler Lockett made sure he got his due this year with an incredible 23-yard touchdown on the Seahawks’ opening drive against the Indianapolis Colts.
Streaking down the middle, Lockett raced to the endzone as the pocket collapsed around Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. Wilson targeted Lockett, who escaped two-high safety coverage by bending past a Colts safety to nab the football.
A genius route-runner, Lockett tricked the safety by taking a step to the right of the field, then bending left as he looped to catch the football in his arms. The deception left Lockett wide open, and he was able to make the catch with his eyes locked securely on the ball.
Anyone who has watched Lockett’s seven-year career with the Seahawks has come to expect these kinds of plays from the staple Seattle receiver. While DK Metcalf is widely regarded as the WR1 in Seattle’s offense, the offense wouldn’t function without Lockett — and that’s something Metcalf made clear when he called Lockett the most underrated WR in the NFL.
While Metcalf boasted an impressive 1,303 sophomore season, Lockett wasn’t far behind with 1,054 yards himself. But what makes Lockett critical is his catch percentage: he had a 75.8 catch percentage in 2020, and an average catch percentage of 72.6 over six NFL seasons.
As of 2020, he owned the highest catch-rate difference in Next Gen Stats history, ranking eighth among top 10 pass-catchers last season. In 2019, he ranked second only behind New Orleans Saints phenom Michael Thomas.
Since 2015, Lockett has been an integral part of pushing the Seahawks to a playoff berth every year except 2017. With Shane Waldon’s exciting new offense in place, the sky is the limit as the Lockett Rocket takes off for his place among NFL stars in another 1,000-plus yard season.
