Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer gave fans hope for a busy offseason after a tough 2021 season.

Cubs fans had to watch Hoyer trade their idols from the 2016 World Series team, one by one, at the MLB Trade Deadline. Javy Baez, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo wear Cubs colors no more. With it, a new generation of Cubs stars must step forward.

The Cubs have gotten surprising contributions from Patrick Wisdom, Frank Schwindel and Rafael Ortega. They have Nick Madrigal waiting in the wings at second base. But all that is not enough to field a competitor.

Chicago Cubs: Jed Hoyer promises active free agency

“We plan to be really active in free agency,” Hoyer said Friday afternoon. “We plan to spend money intelligently. We’re scouting that market heavily. We’re going to analyze that market heavily. There’s offseasons when free agency is something you do a little bit of, and obviously we have to be a little more active than usual to fill out our roster, because we have a lot more open spots.”

Hoyer does make a good point — after dealing away Rizzo, Bryant, Baez and others, the Cubs have plenty of openings. Hearing they will fill those openings, however, is new. It’s a promise Cubs fans aren’t familiar with, as all Hoyer and management have suggested since taking over is a teardown.

Let the rebuild begin.
