3. Red zone defense

As the first two points illustrate, Kansas City defense isn’t that good. Sometimes though, subpar defenses find a way to bend and not break. That has not been the case with this season’s Chiefs defense.

Through the first three games, opposing teams have reached Kansas City’s red zone 12 times. The Chiefs have forced opponents to settle for a field goal once. The other 11 times were all touchdowns.

That isn’t optimal for a team with Super Bowl aspirations. Sometimes your defense will end up in tough situations and have to dig deep and be able to get out of them. They haven’t demonstrated that ability yet.

While the Josh Gordon signing is exciting, it is an example of the rich getting richer while the poor remain poor. The Chiefs offense have looked like theirselves for the most part. They have an AFC second-best 30.7 points per game, fifth best in the league. Meanwhile they have a league worst 31.7 points allowed per game.

While Gordon may help them out score everybody, they’ll need to address their defense so winning shootouts isn’t their only hope.
