Mets: 3 players Steve Cohen wants to get rid of, but can’t

The Mets were in desperate need for a catcher this past winter. J.T. Realmuto always seemed destined to return to the Philadelphia Phillies, so the Mets pivoted and signed former Chicago White Sox backstop James McCann to a four-year, $40.6 million contract to be their everyday starter.
McCann’s first season with the Mets was disappointing, to say the least. The veteran recorded a .232 batting average, a .295 on-base percentage, a .350 slugging percentage, 10 home runs, 42 RBI and 83 hits through 116 games.
Look, it’s obvious that the Mets are going to stick with McCann following this season, even though it was far from promising. He still has three more years remaining on his contract, and it will be hard to move. Besides, top prospect Francisco Alvarez is not projected to make it to the majors until 2023, per MLB.com. There are not many enticing catching options in free agency this winter, so it will be another year of McCann, who will spend the offseason trying to improve upon a down campaign.
