The Houston Astros are just one step away from clinching the American League West, but it all depends on the result of the Mariners-Athletics game.
The Astros’ magic number is down to one, meaning their comeback win over the Tampa Bay Rays can help them clinch the division. They’ll need some help to secure the AL West crown, though.
Should Houston want to take home the division crown on Tuesday night, they’ll need the Mariners to defeat the Athletics. Seattle is in the midst of a playoff race of their own, and every win matters. So, it turns out Mariners and Astros fans are rooting for the same thing. — a Seattle victory.
Astros magic number to clinch AL West: 1
The Astros magic number is down to one.
They defeated the Rays on Tuesday night in a potential ALCS preview in Houston. Tampa melted down in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving up multiple runs by way of the walk.
The Astros hope to complete their redemption tour for the 2017 sign-stealing scandal this postseason. They came close in 2020, losing in seven games to those same Rays in the ALCS.
