The San Francisco Giants received some bad news regarding first baseman Brandon Belt’s thumb injury.

The San Francisco Giants already had a postseason berth locked up entering the final week of the campaign, but the only thing left to determine is whether they would win the NL West title or play in the NL Wild Card Game. The last thing they needed was an injury to one of their starters, which unfortunately happened this past Sunday when first baseman Brandon Belt suffered a fracture in his left thumb after getting hit by a pitch against the Colorado Rockies.

We now have a projected timeline for Belt’s recovery, and it does not bode well for his status in the postseason.

According to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, Belt is expected to be out for around four weeks due to the injury. The report states that the length of time is related to bone healing, not a return-to-function.

Giants: Brandon Belt will be evaluated week-to-week with left thumb fracture

Even with this less-than-promising update, the Giants are still expected to evaluate things on a weekly basis. With that timeline, Belt could be out until the start of the World Series. Belt was placed on the 10-day injured list by the team.

This is brutal news for Belt, because he is the pivotal power bat in San Francisco’s lineup. To be specific, he leads the team with 29 home runs this year, despite missing a decent chunk of time this summer due to right knee inflammation.

Through 97 games, Belt is slashing .274/.378/.597 while recording 59 RBI, 65 runs and 89 hits.

The Giants will have to move onward without Belt, as they look to clinch the division title this week to secure the top seed on the NL-side of the postseason bracket.
