College football upset picks have been hitting at a crazy rate in the 2021 season and don’t expect it to stop in Week 5 with Alabama and more on upset alert.

Upsets are happening in college football at an unprecedented rate through the first four weeks of the 2021 season. 25 teams ranked inside the AP Top 25 have already lost this season, the most since 1936 when the “Poll Era” began. We saw it last week with Clemson, Texas A&M and several others going down — and we can expect more in Week 5.

The college football slate for Week 5 is one of the best of the entire year, so there’s no shortage of upset picks to make. Apologies to the teams that won’t be put on upset alert such as Georgia against Arkansas because they’re ranked too closely or teams like Florida playing Kentucky and Michigan playing Wisconsin that just didn’t make the cut.

Parity is at an all-time high in the sport and we’ll see that again as we put five teams on upset alert and make our college football upset picks for Week 5.

College football upset pick No. 5: Clemson Tigers

Rank: 25 | Opponent: Boston College Eagles | Time: Saturday, Oct. 2, 7:30 p.m. ET

This might feel like piling on Clemson considering that the Tigers just got upset last week in Raleigh by NC State and saw virtually any hope of making the College Football Playoff fall by the wayside. However, there simply seems to be something wrong with Dabo Swinney’s team right now that makes them hard to fully trust.

What’s wrong falls on the offensive side of the ball. There is prodigious talent everywhere but perhaps not as much so as in years past. As such, it feels as if the scheme has been propped up by players like Trevor Lawrence and a young quarterback like D.J. Uiagalelei is bringing a flawed plan of attack to light. That could be even truer with Will Shipley now out due to injury.

Boston College is certainly injured in their own right with quarterback Phil Jurkovec out. However, Dennis Grosel looked quite good against Missouri in an overtime win last week and Jeff Hafley has his team playing well in every phase, even if this is by far the toughest opponent they’ve faced.

I don’t expect the Eagles to be able to score much on Clemson, but that was also true of Georgia Tech, who almost knocked off the Tigers. Boston College is well-coached enough and has enough talent against a team that seems to be reeling to potentially pull off an upset in Chestnut Hill, even if Clemson is a 15.5-point favorite.
