Simply put, regardless of his possible desire to be there, the Steelers will have to usurp other offers the Packers get for Rodgers if/when he’s available come March. Their record of finding players in later rounds of the draft informs this offer. Again, that 2022 first-round pick could being very good if this season goes off the rails. But the 2023 and 2024 first-rounders easily project outside the top-20 if Rodgers is the quarterback and he remains something close to top form.

So three first-rounders is a surprisingly easy price to pay to keep a possible Super Bowl window open, perhaps with some conditions on that 2024 first-rounder that could lower it to the second round.

As the Packers look to remain a contender themselves without Rodgers, they get four high draft picks and a capable player for each side of the ball in Highsmith and Washington. So it’s a win for them too, as Rodgers wants out and is sure to make it clear behind the scenes he will not come back amicably in 2022.

The Steelers have failed to have a succession plan for Roethlisberger, through years of his inviting retirement speculation, injuries and now just plain age-related regression. An all-in move for Rodgers will be on the table come the offseason.
