Projected AP Top 25 college football rankings after Week 5: No. 8-7

8. Oregon Ducks

The big question for Oregon on the heels of an upset loss on the road to Stanford is how far they’ll drop. For me, the Ducks garnered enough goodwill by winning at Ohio State that they’re going to stay in the top 10 and because they beat the Buckeyes, they’ll be ahead of Ryan Day’s team. However, this is a team that should proverbially speaking, be on thin ice moving forward.

You could certainly make the argument that the refs hosed Oregon in the final moments of regulation against the Cardinal as several questionable calls allowed Stanford to force overtime. At the same time, though, the Ducks should’ve never been in that spot against a clearly less talented team. Mario Cristobal and his group have been playing with fire and they got burned, now making their path to the College Football Playoff a bit more difficult.

7. Michigan Wolverines

You can call it an overreaction if you want, but Michigan clearly looks like one of the 10 best teams in the country and their 5-0 record vaults them ahead of the likes of Oregon and Ohio State in my book.

Jim Harbaugh picked up the first road win of his tenure in Ann Arbor when his team entered the game as an underdog. And what the Wolverines did to Wisconsin in Camp Randall was hard not to be impressed by. They showed off a versatile offensive attack and, more importantly, a suffocating defense that looks strong on every level.

Because they came into the year unranked and with little fanfare, some people might be overlooking that this could be the best Michigan team Harbaugh has had. Don’t sleep on this group, though, because all the signs point to them being absolutely for real.
