Mike Tyson gives Deontay Wilder advice ahead of Tyson Fury rematch

Mike Tyson offered Deontay Wilder some advice ahead of his trilogy bout with Tyson Fury. He thinks the former WBC champ needs to strike quickly. 

Mike Tyson offered Deontay Wilder some advice a week before Tyson Fury and Wilder meet in their Oct. 9 championship boxing trilogy bout.

Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs) knows a thing or two about the sweet science. He was the youngest person to lay claim to the heavyweight title in1986 after stopping Trevor Berbick in two rounds to win the WBC title, which is the belt Fury won from Wilder in February 2020.

Wilder’s corner threw in the towel in round 7, giving Fury the TKO victory in their second meeting. A lot has been said since, but Wilder fired trainer Mark Breland and elevated Malik Scott to head trainer. Wilder has been training since the loss and hopes to reveal sharpened skills against Fury the third time around.

Wilder (42-1-1, 41 KOs) and Tyson aren’t close. Wilder’s co-trainer and co-manager Jay Deas once told me that Wilder wasn’t a fan of Tyson’s after some disparaging remarks from Tyson made their way back to Wilder.

Wilder told TMZ in 2018 that he would “kick the hell outta that guy,” meaning Tyson, if the two had fought when Tyson was still active. He also has expressed respect for Tyson’s accomplishments while talking with this reporter.

Still, Wilder and Tyson aren’t friends.

Tyson recently told YouTube channel ES News what he thinks Wilder needs to do if he wants the best chance against Fury.

“[Deontay Wilder] should go all out for five or six rounds,” Tyson told ES News (h/t ESPN Ringside). “If you catch him, you catch him. Go all out, win or lose.”

Wilder has a phenomenal KO rating at 93 percent, so Tyson’s advice sounds logical. In the lead-up to the trilogy contest, Wilder has shared videos of his improving boxing skills. He also seems focused and determined for revenge against Fury.
