4. Joe Lombardi, Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator

With what he’s doing in his first season as the Chargers’ offensive coordinator, Lombardi is quickly advancing himself as a head coaching candidate. Justin Herbert is a great starting point, but Lombardi is designing a system that has unlocked wide receiver Mike Williams through five games.

Prior to getting the opportunity with the Chargers, Lombardi was an offensive assistant and then quarterbacks coach with the New Orleans Saints for the most part from 2007-20. A two-year stint (2014-15) as Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator was the only time over that span he wasn’t under Sean Payton or working with Drew Brees. Even during that two-year hiatus from New Orleans, he worked with another top-end quarterback in Matthew Stafford.

The Saints’ offense is the root of Lombardi’s philosophy, and it’s proven effective and continually adaptable to the available talent. That’s exactly the kind of offensive mind Lawrence should want as his next head coach. The question is what head coaching opportunities Lombardi will have after the season, and if any of them will sufficiently motivate him to leave Herbert after one season.
