3. Byron Leftwich, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator

It’s absolutely a matter of when, not if, Leftwich becomes an NFL head coach. Under the tutelage of Bruce Arians, he has risen fairly quickly from his start as Arizona Cardinals quarterbacks coach in 2017 to now being in his third season as Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator.

Working with the ageless Tom Brady as Leftwich has over the last two years will make any coordinator look good. But Leftwich brings his own experience as an NFL quarterback to the table, drafted seventh-overall in 2003 by the Jaguars (coincidentally)–and he’s actually younger than Brady (41 years old). A particular understanding of the pressure attached to being a top draft pick/anointed franchise savior is valuable perspective he can offer to any young quarterback as a coach.

Another deep playoff run by the Buccaneers would likely diminish the number of interview opportunities Leftwich gets, as wrong as it would be. But Lawrence should have him on an early hypothetical list of who he’d like to replace Meyer, and more specifically the Jaguars should be willing to wait for Leftwich through a playoff run if it’s necesssary.
