San Antonio Spurs: Will a star emerge?

The Spurs roster is littered with interesting, intriguing role+ players. The problem in San Antonio is that there is no star to count on to really tie this team together.

That’s why the 2021-22 season should be all about finding an alpha dog for the Spurs. In particular, they need a perimeter or wing creator that can start to lead them in scoring on a nightly basis. Derrick White has flashed that kind of ability in the past, but it’s fair to wonder whether things are ever going to come together for him in San Antonio.

That largely leaves younger players like Lonnie Walker and Devin Vassell as the franchise’s best hopes. Neither has shown a ton at the pro level, but both have the athleticism and potential shooting stroke to become above-average starters. Either or both wings need to show a lot more this season if they want to earn that kind of trust inside the Spurs organization.

Unfortunately for fans in San Antonio, the days of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili are a distant memory. This edition of the Spurs would be lucky to have one star capable of being mentioned in the same breath as that legendary trio.
