Minkah Fitzpatrick will finally have a big game

Steelers fans are growing anxious about the play of the two-time All-Pro. That’s not to say that Fitzpatrick has been terrible, but he’s certainly not playing to the level he is capable of. A lot of that is because the Steelers are asking him to wear multiple hats in the secondary. He’s not just playing safety. They’ve had him play in slot coverage, they’ve put him in the box- they are asking him to do a ton on that side of the ball.

To Fitzpatrick’s credit, he has made a few big plays near the line of scrimmage this year. That said, it’s evident that Pittsburgh misses Steven Nelson and Mike Hilton. Both were phenomenal in man coverage, which allowed Fitzpatrick to play that center field role. The Steelers don’t have the personnel to allow Fitzpatrick to do that at the rate he once did.

Playing against a backup quarterback will lead to Fitzpatrick’s first interception of the season. If there was ever a time for him to have a big game, it’s now. A big performance Sunday night would do a lot for Fitzpatrick’s confidence, but also would be a huge spark for the defense as a whole.
