Giants should target either Nick Castellanos or Marcus Stroman

It’s unlikely the Giants add both of these players given luxury tax constraints, but there’s a solid case to add at least one of them.

Castellanos was incredibly productive in a contract year in Cincinnati, hitting .309 with 31 home runs and nearly leading the Reds to the Wild Card. While his defensive ability holds him back a bit, Castellanos serves as a better long-term right field option than Late Night LaMonte (as much as it pains me to say such a thing).

All of this is dependent on Castellanos opting out of his contract. It would make sense for him to do so, of course, given the bidding war that would ensue in free agency.

IF the Giants lose one of Kevin Gausman or Anthony DeSclafani, they could go another route, as well, chasing New York Mets starter Marcus Stroman.

At 30, Stroman is entering free agency after a full season in which he pitched a 3.02 ERA, leading the Mets staff that dealt with injuries to Jacob deGrom all year along. Stroman and Gausman would probably cancel out salary-wise, so the Giants would have to choose one or the other.
