Miami football: Mario Cristobal and 5 options to replace Manny Diaz
By John Buhler
Billy Napier is one of the biggest names who could make the Power Five jump
Even if the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns are nowhere near as good as they were a year ago, everybody knows their head coach Billy Napier is destined for big things. While he is more likely to take over an SEC program more than anything, Napier is elite at building a culture, and that is something Miami could be interested in. Though he is a candidate, there are two bigger names to pursue.
Luke Fickell could stay at Cincinnati, but Miami is a major job worth considering
One of the most intriguing potential head-coaching candidates out there is Fickell at Cincinnati. Though he would love to lead his alma mater Ohio State, that’s not happening. While the Bearcats are Big 12 bound in a few years, Fickell is ready for a bigger stage if he wants one. Whether he wants to go to USC, LSU or even Miami, major programs like that will be wanting to hear from him.
Mario Cristobal has Oregon humming, but Miami is home for the former Cane
If the Hurricanes are going to fire Diaz, then they need to go for broke and bring back one of their own. Mario Cristobal can stay at Oregon for as long as he wants, but there are three he could potentially leave the Pacific Northwest for: Alabama once Nick Saban retires, LSU if Ed Orgeron gets fired or Miami if the Hurricanes are done with Diaz. Cristobal will not come cheap either.
Though things look bleak for Miami right now, help could be on its way with a new head coach.
