The Steelers secondary will have its best performance

The Steelers issues on the back end were obvious in their three game losing streak. James Pierre was beaten deep multiple times, specifically by Ja’Marr Chase in the Cincinnati game. A miscommunication between Minkah Fitzpatrick and Ahkello Witherspoon led to a long Henry Ruggs touchdown against the Raiders. Even in the win against Denver, Courtland Sutton had a deep touchdown where he beat Pierre.

In the last two games, though, the Steelers have looked much better in the secondary. Arthur Maulet has settled into the starting nickel role, which is what really held Pittsburgh back. They were rotating different guys in that spot and couldn’t find a go-to slot cornerback. This included putting Minkah Fitzpatrick in slot coverage at times, which led to limitations for the All-Pro safety.

Rookie cornerback Tre Norwood has emerged as a key member of the secondary. He had a great game against Seattle and has proven to be a reliable piece when called upon.

Maulet stepping up should lead to Fitzpatrick finally settling in and making the big plays he is capable of making. With the Browns depleted at receiver, the Steelers can trust their cornerbacks and allow Fitzpatrick to play that centerfield role. Fans have been begging for him to make a huge play. He had a pick-six against Cleveland last year. This would be the perfect time to get his first interception of 2021.
