2. Tyrod Taylor, Houston Texans

Heading into what seemed like a winnable matchup against the Dolphins, the Houston Texans made the call to activate veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor from IR after rookie Davis Mills had been running the show for several weeks. As it turns out, the experience of Taylor did not prove beneficial against a Miami defense that had been quite bad throughout much of this season.

Taylor threw the ball 43 times in the game but managed only 24 completions for 240 yards. Even worse, he failed to find the end zone at any point in the game and the quarterback threw three back-breaking interceptions that consistently robbed the Texans of opportunities to take control of a game that wasn’t out of reach.

To be sure, not all of this was the fault of Taylor. The Houston offensive line was porous and allowed five sacks on the day. But when you insert a veteran over a rookie that’s been getting valuable reps, the hope is that it provides a safety net for the team. Instead, Taylor was a costly presence for the Texans.

Houston would be much better off turning to Mills for the rest of the season. The third-round rookie might not be the quarterback of the future but the Texans should want to see as much of him on the field as humanly possible. Starting Taylor doesn’t offer anything for the future and, as evidenced on Sunday, doesn’t even necessarily give them a better chance to win.
