Luis Rojas could get back at Mets with next job choice

Former New York Mets manager Luis Rojas could be staying in New York: this time, it’s likely to be as third base coach of the New York Yankees. 

When a baseball player gets traded away, seeing his former team always calls for a high-caliber “revenge game” performance.

The same goes for coaches, who love to defeat the team that scorned them with the new team that signed them.

In Luis Rojas‘ case, he is likely going to stay in New York, but it won’t be with the New York Mets — it will be with the New York Yankees.

According to MLB insider Joel Sherman, there’s “the strong likelihood” that Rojas will take a job as the Yankees’ third base coach. Sources indicate that Rojas hit it off with with Yankees general manager Aaron Boone during the interview process.

Although moving from manager to third base coach may seem like a downgrade, Rojas will benefit from the stability of the position and the opportunity to grow with the Yankees as opposed to how he landed his job with the Mets.

Rojas grew up around the managing world because his father, Felipe Alou, was the manager for the Montreal Expos. Rojas has been affiliated with the Mets since 2007, working his way through minor league teams as well as with the Dominican Professional Baseball League.

After being promoted up to the New York Mets as their quality control coach in 2019, Rojas was promoted to Mets manager in Jan. 2020. Rojas was promoted because Carlos Beltran was implicated in the Houston Astros 2017 sign-stealing scandal.

In his two season at manager, Rojas went 26-34 and 77-85.

As Rojas hopes to build his resume and experience, there’s the hint of sweet revenge that he will be able to do so with New York’s much more successful baseball franchise.
