Yankees: 3 free agents to sign and 1 to avoid this offseason
Yankees free agency rumors: Avoid Javier Baez
Baez is an elite power hitter who has already proven his ability to play in the cauldron that is New York City. He’s still a player the Yankees should avoid like the plague in free agency.
The simple truth is that he’s just repetitive with too many other players on the current roster. His career strikeout rate of 29.3 percent should be a huge red flag for the Yankees’ front office. Boone’s lineup needs high contact hitters to improve when the playoffs roll around. Baez is capable of occasional moments of brilliance, but he fails to put the bat on the ball far too often to excel for the Yankees.
Don’t be surprised to see New York used as a tool by Baez’s representatives as he negotiates with other teams. That doesn’t mean the Yankees are actually interested in landing him. Their resources are better spent elsewhere.
There’s a lot to like about Baez’s game and he’s going to be a difference-maker for someone next season. He’s just a poor fit for what the Yankees need right now. That’s why he’s the most high-profile free agent the team should avoid this offseason.
