The Ravens’ secondary has struggled with giving up big passing plays this season. Some of this is due to bad coverage, and some of this is simply miscommunications. To make matters worse, starting free safety DeShon Elliott is out for the season after suffering a torn biceps in Week 9 against the Vikings.

Rookie Brandon Stephens is currently starting in Elliott’s absence, but it would be wise to get second-year safety Geno Stone more involved.

The Ravens drafted Stone in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

At Iowa, Stone was an aggressive tackler and played with a high motor. Those traits showed up on Thursday night against the Dolphins.

On this play, Isaiah Ford beat Anthony Averett on the sideline for a 52-yard gain, and Stone comes from behind to outrun Averett and Chuck Clark and make the tackle, which prevented Ford from making it to the end zone:

Stone’s ball skills should not be overlooked, either. At Iowa, Stone was a ballhawk. He had four interceptions in his sophomore season.

In a preseason game against the Saints, Stone had two interceptions, as well.

Stone has not had a lot of opportunities to contribute, thus far. With Elliott’s injury, it is the perfect time for the Ravens to truly evaluate Stone.
