3. Matt Campbell, Iowa State head coach

If there’s a coaching carousel going on, you know that Matt Campbell is going to be mentioned. The job that he’s done at Iowa State building the Cyclones program into a legitimate threat in the Big 12 when they’ve never sniffed that prior to his tenure is something special.

The big question for Campbell at Texas would always be the jump up in recruiting, which is certainly noteworthy. Recruiting for Iowa State is far different than doing so for the Longhorns.

Having said that, even when the Longhorns have talent, it hasn’t stopped the lackluster results. That’s where Campbell’s talent development and culture creation would be pivotal to the long-term success of Texas football and why the program should’ve pushed harder to lure him away.

2. Mel Tucker, Michigan State head coach

Considering that Mel Tucker currently has the Spartans in the College Football Playoff conversation, this might be considered a hindsight being 20/20 type of conversation. But when you also take into account that Tucker exceeded expectations last year at Michigan State and clearly had the juice flowing, you have to wonder if Texas should’ve had any interest in him.

Tucker obviously has an innate ability to get his players to buy in, which seems to be an issue in Austin right now. Moreover, he’s also terrific at using every asset at his disposal on the recruiting trail. These are the types of things that the Longhorns need to get on track and Tucker could’ve provided them.

1. Urban Meyer, FOX analyst (at time of Texas football coaching change)

Yes, this looks worse now after Meyer’s controversies while with the Jaguars. But he was always better-made for the college football coaching ranks and, if there’s one man who could actually bring Texas football back, you have to believe it would be Urban Meyer.

When you’re talking about recruiting with the best in the country, Meyer is almost unparalleled. On top of that, he’s phenomenal at identifying assistant coaching talent to help out with his already solid scheme.

It might not have been the smoothest road possible but Longhorns fans certainly would’ve felt much more confident in Meyer than they are Sark at this point.
