David Benavidez provided a victorious hometown performance in Phoenix, AZ, against replacement Kyrone Davis to remain undefeated.

On Saturday, Nov. 13, there were no surprises for former two-time super middleweight boxing champion David Benavidez. He handled his business against courageous Kyrone Davis and collected another notch in the KO column.

Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs) has only lost battles to the scale, but in the ring, he’s perfect. He hadn’t fought in his hometown of Phoenix, AZ, since 2015, but he made his return fighting Davis at the Footprint Center.

Davis (16-3-1, 6 KOs) took the assignment against Benavidez on short notice. Benavidez was supposed to fight former IBF titlist Jose Uzcategui, but he tested positive for PEDs. Davis looked excellent against Anthony Dirrell in February but had to settle for a draw. He should have gotten the win, but he didn’t have a chance against Benavidez.

David Benavidez defeated Kyrone Davis as expected and could be in line to fight Canelo Alvarez next

Davis opened up the fight with a lot of movement on the outside. Benavidez stalked him, and he tried to stay away. As the rounds went on, Davis grew fatigued and got pinned along the ropes.

The situation grew dire for Davis in rounds 5 and 6. Benavidez landed clean uppercuts and just about every other punch he threw. Davis’s trainer, Stephen ‘Breadman’ Edwards, threatened to stop the fight but allowed Davis to enter round 7.

Nothing changed and Davis’s body language grew concerning as he ate more punches from Benavidez on the ropes. Edwards saw enough and threw in the towel, giving Benavidez the round 7 TKO win.

Benavidez recorded his fifth stoppage in a row and is a serious threat to undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez. Alvarez recently stopped previously undefeated Caleb Plant in round11. Alvarez vs. Benavidez would be an incredible fight. Can they make it happen, or will boxing politics get in the way? Time will tell.
