1. Byron Buxton

Cashman surprised some Yankees fans by openly discussing the possibility of adding a new centerfielder this offseason in a recent interview. It’s clear the organization is concerned about Aaron Hicks’ ability to stay healthy moving forward.

The crop of available centerfielders in free agency is pretty thin. Starling Marte is really the only player worthy of New York’s consideration. If he goes elsewhere, Cashman may be forced to look to upgrade the crucial position with a big trade.

Buxton has one of the highest upsides of any players that might be moved this offseason. He’s got a lengthy injury history of his own, but he’s an electrifying player when he’s healthy and on the field. The Yankees could decide that gambling on the 27-year-old to replace Hicks could give their outfield the boost they need to win it all in 2022.

The Twins are feeling some pressure to part with Buxton after his decision to turn down an $80 million extension, but they also realize the scarcity of quality centerfielders available. It will take a massive offer from the Yankees to convince Minnesota with the former No. 2 overall pick. It’s still a deal that could come together if New York is comfortable with Buxton’s medicals.
