Saints’ interception negated by roughing the passer

The Saints eventually lost to the Tennessee Titans, but at one point in the first half, it was actually a close game between two contenders in opposite conferences. Roughing the passer is a common theme this week — as always — and it robbed the Saints of a potential game-changing interception.

Ryan Tannehill was hit just as he let go of the ball, and the Saints were called for roughing the passer. The call itself was suspect to say the least, and the Titans would go on to score on the possession, extending their lead.

Had Tannehill been drilled by the Saints defender even a second too late, the officials would’ve had no choice but to call the penalty. Given the situation, and the fact that the Saints defensive lineman timed his tackle perfectly, the referee should’ve swallowed his whistle. Once the call was made, there was no going back.

The Saints would lose by two points, 21-23, against the Titans.
