1. Aaron Hicks

Hicks easily tops the list as the player the Yankees would most like to jettison because his bloated contract is guaranteed through the 2025 regular season. The chances of him ever being worth the roughly $10 million annual salary he’s set to earn on his current contract are minimal.

A wrist injury limited the veteran outfielder to just 32 games last season. Durability has been a major issue for Hicks during his entire career. He’s only managed to play more than 100 games twice in his nine professional seasons.

Even when Hicks is healthy, his game is an acquired taste at best. He doesn’t hit for much power or a high batting average. Instead, he relies on walks to power him to a quality OBP worthy of keeping him in the everyday lineup. That’s not the sort of dynamic production Yankee fans want to see out of the centerfield position.

The good news for fans in New York is that Cashman has already spoken publicly about his interest in upgrading the position this offseason. That doesn’t mean he’ll be able to get rid of Hicks, but it does mean that he’s not going to sit back and hope for him to suddenly develop into a quality starter. Hicks’ spot in Boone’s lineup next year is tenuous at best.
