3 NFL quarterbacks that must be benched after Week 11
By John Buhler
Baker Mayfield nearly lost at home to Tim Boyle and the Detroit Lions
Let’s be real. If the Cleveland Browns played 28 other teams, they would have lost. Thankfully for their fans, their Week 11 opponent was the winless Detroit Lions. Though a win is a win, beating the worst team in football at home 13-10 when they were starting a backup quarterback is a bad look. Tim Boyle nearly got the best of Baker Mayfield on Sunday and that speaks volumes.
While Mayfield is just going to have to grind through injuries this year, the Browns beat the Lions because of the Cleveland running game, and not him. Mayfield completed 15-of-29 passes for 176 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Though weather was an issue in this one, better quarterback play would have parlayed into an easy victory for the Browns. What is going on here?
Even if Mayfield is not as bad as his second year in the league, he does not look to be all that much better than he was as a rookie coming out of Oklahoma. Is he a starting quarterback in the league? Yes, but is he a franchise quarterback? That is the tough question the Browns’ front office will have to answer this offseason. He’s okay, but he is not on Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson’s level at all.
If Cleveland wants to make the AFC playoffs, the Browns may need to roll with Case Keenum.
