20. Arkansas Razorbacks

For much of the season, Sam Pittman’s Razorbacks were a roller-coaster from game to game. One outing, they would look the part of a top 25 team. The next time they took the field, the defense might as well had not gotten off the bus because they weren’t doing anything. So after putting a scare in Alabama, the worry was that the letdown game against Missouri was on-deck.

Instead, Pittman’s Hogs made a statement on Black Friday as Arkansas picked up a convincing 34-17 victory behind a stellar KJ Jefferson performance and one of the best defensive showings of the season. This was a big year for the Hogs after coming into it with modest expectations and they proved the future is bright with their head coach.

19. San Diego State Aztecs

All prayers to the Punt God and any other deity from San Diego State fans were answered on Friday night. Early on, it seemed as if the one-loss season was slipping from the grasps of the Aztecs as Boise State jumped out to a 16-3 lead midway through the second quarter. But as they’re wont to do, SDSU just chipped away at the lead and ultimately took control.

Blanking the Broncos in the second half while finding the end zone twice, the Aztecs were able to capture a spot in the Mountain West Championship Game with the 27-16 win over Boise State. They are the quietest one-loss team in the country (outside of punting sensation Matt Araiza) but they keep reeling off victories.
