Oregon football: Chip Kelly and 5 replacements for Mario Cristobal
By Ethan Lee
2. Dave Clawson
It’s very difficult to win at Bowling Green and Wake Forest, but Dave Clawson has proven that it is possible. His coaching record is impressive and, as Wake Forest is sitting at 10-3 following an appearance in the ACC Championship Game, Clawson is looking like one of the best possible coaching candidates for any job anywhere.
Clawson has shown that his offense can thrive at both Bowling Green and Wake Forest. It’s a little unconventional and innovative, which is something that has worked well for Oregon in the past. The Ducks returning to their roots and bringing in someone who can design an explosive offense might be a wise thing to do.
The Demon Deacons averaged 41.2 points per game this season and they were able to gain 469.2 yards per game. While their defense wasn’t exactly thrilling or impressive for much of the year, Wake Forest was able to win because of how often they scored.
Clawson has been at Wake Forest since 2014, and he might be interested in a change of scenery. It wouldn’t hurt for Oregon to give him a call.
1. Kalani Sitake
The BYU Cougars are a great program with a lot of history and Kalani Sitake has been able to bring BYU some impressive seasons as of late. Following Bronco Mendenhall as the head coach of the Cougars, Sitake has shown that he can win at a high level and maintain consistent success.
Would he be willing to do that for the Ducks?
Oregon has to consider everything that Sitake has been able to do with BYU. There are limitations to being an independent football program and Sitake has helped the Cougars navigate some of those with ease.
Outside of a disappointing 4-9 season in 2017, BYU has had a winning record in every season Sitake has coached.
BYU went 9-4 in Sitake’s first season in 2016, winning the Poinsettia Bowl to cap off the season. While back-to-back 7-6 seasons in 2018 and 2019 weren’t exactly great for the Cougars, Sitake took BYU to an 11-1 year in 2020 and then has the Cougars at 10-2 this season.
Sitake has elevated BYU to a pretty high level and has the Cougars primed for success once they make the move to the Big 12. Will he be around for that move or would he consider coaching at Oregon?
