Running Backs

Saquon Barkley, New York Giants at Los Angeles Chargers-$7,300

Barkley has not gotten to 60 rushing yards in any of the eight games he has played this season. But it is promising that he has gotten 17 touches in back-to-back games, with 20 targets as a pass receiver over the last three.

With Daniel Jones (neck) likely to miss another game and Mike Glennon naturally questionable after suffering a concussion last week, the Giants are likely down to recent signing Jake Fromm as their starting quarterback against the Chargers on Sunday. So that makes it safe to say Barkley will be busy, against the league’s second-worst run defense (141.2 yards allowed per game) and the sixth-worst unit in fantasy points allowed to running backs.

A bet on this week Barkley is a bet rooted in volume, as in 20-25 touches. He also happens to have a good matchup.

Javonte Williams, Denver Broncos vs. Detroit Lions-$6,700

With Melvin Gordon (hip) out, Williams offered a 2022 preview in Week 13 against the Kansas City Chiefs (23 carries for 102 yards; six receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown). Gordon’s status for Week 14 is unclear, but if he does suit up there’s no reason for him to eat much into Williams’ role.

The rookie out of UNC gets a nice matchup this week, as the Detroit Lions are allowing the third-most fantasy points per game to running backs this season. Some big games (three receiving touchdowns for Aaron Jones, four combined rushing touchdowns for Jordan Howard and Boston Scott) skew that standing, but Detroit’s run defense is generous (28th in the league).

If Gordon is able to play, there’s some risk of Williams losing a chunk of work to him. But “Javonte’s Inferno” (h/t to The Fantasy Football Ballers) should stay ablaze in Week 14.
