5 bold predictions for Tottenham’s January transfer window
2. Steven Bergwijn will be sold
Conte’s gone out of his way to say that Bergwijn has the qualities required to become Harry Kane’s backup at striker, but those words are only designed to preserve the attacker’s transfer value for a few more weeks. He’s clearly a player that doesn’t fit Conte’s tactics.
That’s why numerous Dutch sources have reported that Bergwijn will be looking for a new club in January. It’s disappointing that Spurs will give up on such a promising young talent, but sacrificing him for a solid fee should help reel in a player that Conte covets next month.
The idea that Bergwijn will be loaned out should be dismissed out of hand. If he leaves Tottenham in January it will be on a permanent basis for a sizeable transfer fee. Daniel Levy and the higher-ups at the club aren’t going to let such a prodigious talent go for free.
Bergwijn’s departure will be particularly good news for Bryan Gil as he tries to find his way into Conte’s plans. The young Spaniard showed real promise earlier this season but has fallen to the fringes of Conte’s squad in recent weeks. He should get a new lease on life with Bergwijn on his way out the door.
