Top 30 NFL teams in history
8. 1989 San Francisco 49ers
In terms of pure talent, this may be the most stacked team in NFL history. 1989 was the peak season for the Montana-Rice era. On top of that, they had Roger Craig out of the backfield and Ronnie Lott on defense, just to name a few others.
The 49ers led the NFL in points in 1989. They put up 442 points, which was good for an average of 27.6 points per game. The 49ers also put up the most yards of any team that season with 6,268. Their air attack was second in the NFL, and they had the most touchdowns through the air as well with 35.
The 49ers defense allowed the third fewest points in the league. They allowed 253 points, and also allowed the fourth fewest total yards in the NFL. Their playoff run might be the greatest in NFL history. In three games, they outscored their opponents 126-26.
They capped off their incredible 14-2 season with a 55-10 win over the Broncos in the Super Bowl- the most points scored by one team in Super Bowl history. It would be the final Super Bowl win for the 49ers under Joe Montana, and what a win it was.
