Broncos: 3 replacements for Vic Fangio this offseason
By Scott Rogust
Brian Daboll, Bills offensive coordinator
In this past offseason’s coaching carousel, one of the more popular names was Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. He interviewed for the head coaching vacancies for the Los Angeles Chargers and New York Jets, but both teams hired Brandon Staley and Robert Saleh, respectively.
Even though the Bills offensive production has dipped a little bit this season, Daboll should still be a popular name this upcoming offseason, and he could very well earn his first head coaching gig. One reason for that is the work he has done with quarterback Josh Allen, who played at an MVP level throughout the 2020 season after throwing for 4,544 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while owning a completion percentage of 69.2.
This year, the Bills offense has averaged 377.9 yards and 28.1 points per game this season following their 31-14 win over the Carolina Panthers this Sunday.
Daboll is a great option for the Broncos, especially if they decide to select a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft. If there is one coach you want to develop your rookie signal-caller, it is Daboll.
Byron Leftwich, Buccaneers offensive coordinator
One of the more shocking omissions from the head coaching interview cycle this past offseason was Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. The move was stunning, considering that Tampa Bay just won the Super Bowl.
That is slated to change this offseason.
Leftwich joined Bruce Arians, who came out of retirement, in Tampa in 2019. After one year with Jameis Winston at quarterback, the team pivoted to signing Tom Brady in free agency. Things were shaky throughout the 2020 season, but Leftwich and Brady got things right and hoisted the Lombardi Trophy inside Raymond James Stadium last February.
This season, the Buccaneers have one of the top offenses in the league entering Week 15. Through 13 games, Leftwich’s offense averaged 410.2 yards and 31.5 points per game, both of which were the highest in the entire NFL.
Leftwich is likely to receive some interview opportunities this offseason, and the Broncos should absolutely be one of them. It would be a solid destination for Leftwich, considering the talent he would have to work with on the offensive side of the ball.
