Los Angeles Rams: Jared Goff

This one may leave us as the victim of recency bias, but the hype train was rolling for Jared Goff from 2017-19.

Goff struggled in his rookie season under Jeff Fisher. Yeah, remember when Jeff Fisher was the coach of the Rams? That was only five years ago and it feels like 30 lifetimes. When Sean McVay took over as head coach, Goff’s production increased exponentially. He was a Pro Bowler in 2017 and the Rams won the NFC West.

Goff repeated his success in 2018 and helped lead the Rams to the Super Bowl. While they came up short against the Patriots, Goff threw for 32 touchdowns in the regular season and seemed poised to eventually get a ring on his finger.

Then, 2019 and 2020 seemed to expose Goff. It looked as if midnight had struck on his great run. The Rams missed the playoffs in 2019, going 9-7. They returned to the playoffs in 2020, defeating the Seahawks in the Wildcard Round and falling to the Packers at Lambeau Field the following week.

Now in Detroit, it’s fair to say that Goff isn’t bad, but he is not an upper tier starter in the league. He’ll be a guy who is utilized as a bridge quarterback and can help very good teams win, but he isn’t going to save a franchise.
