Every NFL team’s most overrated player of all time
Carolina Panthers: Steve Beuerlein
Wow, the Panthers have suffered through terrible quarterback play since their inception. With few exceptions, the Panthers have rolled through the likes of Jimmy Clausen, Kerry Collins, Rodney Pete, and the 2021 version of Cam Newton who looks more like Issac Newton than an NFL quarterback under center.
For a brief moment, it looked like Steve Beuerlein would be their answer at quarterback for the foreseeable future. In 1998, Beuerlein started 12 games, throwing 17 touchdowns and completing a league-high 63 percent of his passes. In 1999, he went off for a league-high 4,436 yards and 36 touchdowns. Carolina went 8-8 that season despite Beuerlein’s great season.
2000 didn’t bring the Panthers any luck, either. They went 7-9, and Beuerlein took a big step back. He was a one year wonder for Carolina, as they continued to try to find a franchise quarterback. They would eventually land on Jake Delhomme, who led them to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2003 season.
Beuerlein’s one great year seemed to set things in motion for the Panthers, but he came down to Earth soon after and kept the Panthers looking. His one year wonder season would make a great trivia question among friends, but that’s about all he can contribute.
