The Green Bay Packers host the Cleveland Browns on Christmas afternoon. And their young head coach continues to put up impressive numbers.

It’s the only team in the league after 15 weeks of play that has won a division title. Thanks to a 31-30 win at Baltimore last Sunday, the Green Bay Packers are NFC North champions for the third consecutive year. And head coach Matt LaFleur continues to open eyes in his first stint as an NFL sideline leader.

The Packers own a NFL-best 11-3 record after 14 games. Combine that with a pair of 13-3 finishes in 2019 and ’20 and LaFleur’s regular-season resume reads at 37-9. And with a win at home on Christmas afternoon against the Cleveland Browns, the talented coach can equal an NFL record set 30 years ago (via Reddit) by Super Bowl champion George Seifert.

Packers: Matt LaFleur could set NFL record this season

The defensive mind of the San Francisco 49ers took over as head coach of the team in 1989, replacing Hall of Famer Bill Walsh. The Niners finished 14-2 that first year and won Super Bowl XXIV, went 14-2 in 1990 and fell in the NFC title game and then came up with a 10-6 mark in 1991. That wasn’t good enough to reach the playoffs that year.

Do the easy math and that’s a combined 38-10 record in the regular season. So a win over the Browns today by Aaron Rodgers and company and LaFleur would equal that victory total. Of course, there’s an extra game this year but who knows what the team’s win-loss record will be by season’s end?

Lest anyone forget that a year ago, the Packers were the top seed in the NFC and reached the conference championship game for the second-straight year. But home field advantage was not enough to secure a win as LaFleur’s club fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Buccaneers. And it’s safe to say that Green Bay’s current head coach would trade in any personal accolade for a trip to the West Coast (Super Bowl LVI) in mid-February.
