NC State coach Dave Doeren calls out NCAA for Holiday Bowl cancelation (Video)
NC State head coach Dave Doeren is not happy with the NCAA for not forcing UCLA to forfeit the Holiday Bowl, which was canceled over COVID-19.
Bowls being canceled because of COVID-19 is a reality many teams have had to deal with this year. However, the circumstances around the Holiday Bowl cancelation were somewhat unique.
NC State officials weren’t aware UCLA was even dealing with serious COVID issues until the game was canceled just a few hours before kickoff.
Head coach Dave Doeren vented his frustration over it all when the NCAA decided UCLA didn’t need to forfeit the game.
NC State head coach Dave Doeren lambasted the NCAA
“The NCAA stands for No Clue At All in my opinion. I don’t really care what they say about it,” Doeren told Pack Pride. “We took a roster of guys down there, had zero covid issues, practiced every day, did everything right and didn’t get a chance to play the game. As far as I’m concerned we did beat them, they couldn’t even get to the field.”
Doeren pointed out that the guidelines for the College Football Playoff would have had a team forfeit under the exact same circumstances. He believes the Holiday Bowl should have been governed by the same standards.
Players weren’t going to get the chance to play either way. So why is Doeren so peeved about a cancelation instead of a forfeit?
If the Wolfpack had won they would have been 10-3 this season. The extra win would have triggered a bigger bonus for the head coach, from $100,000 for nine wins to $150,000 for 10, per Stewart Mandel.
In that context, it makes sense why Doeren has been so vocal in his criticism.
