What do Canelo Alvarez, Oscar Valdez, Andy Ruiz Jr., and Frank Sanchez all have in common? They’re all trained by Eddy Reynoso, FanSided’s 2021 Trainer of the Year.

Reynoso’s quickly becoming the most prominent trainer in boxing. Alvarez is the sport’s biggest star, and other fighters are swarming to join Team Canelo headed by Reynoso. All of the previously mentioned boxers finished 2021 with all wins and no losses. Reynoso and Alvarez are a winning combination, and the formula is also working for everyone who joins their orbit.

Alvarez won three fights in 2021 and became the undisputed super middleweight champion. Valdez scored our Knockout of the Year, and Frank Sanchez is looking like the next big thing in the heavyweight division. Reynoso and his team are hitting on all cylinders.

Also, Ruiz could be in for top-level fights in 2022, as could Ryan Garcia, who hasn’t fought since early 2021 but is also under Reynoso’s stewardship. If these fighters score big in the New Year, Reynoso could add to his training dominance.

Reynoso garnered a commanding number of votes in our tally and had a year to remember. Boxing is filled with brilliant trainers like Joel Diaz, Kay Koroma, Derrick James, Calvin Ford, and many others, but 2021 was Reynoso’s year.

“Eddy’s stable of champions continued their winning ways this year,” said Abe Gonzalez.

“Eddy and Canelo are on a roll,” added Todd Snyder. “And, he is building quite a stable of fighters. Aside from the band news from Valdez, it was a near-perfect year for Team Canelo.”
