Raiders trade rumors, Marcus Mariota

Sign Marcus Mariota

Make no mistake about it, the upcoming quarterback free agency class is far from strong. But, it could present the Vikings the opportunity to bring in a signal caller with some upside on the cheap. Perhaps one of the best options is Marcus Mariota.

The former Oregon Ducks star quarterback was selected with the second-overall pick by the Tennessee Titans in the 2015 NFL Draft. Mariota did not pan out with the Titans, and he was ultimately benched in favor of current starter Ryan Tannehill.

Mariota was signed by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020 to serve as backup to quarterback Derek Carr. Even though he never took over the starter’s job, he is used on trick plays and has even had some extended playing time in place of an injured Carr.

In his lone appearance in the 2020 season, Mariota completed 17-of-28 pass attempts for 226 yards, one touchdown and one interception, and rushed for 88 yards and one touchdown on nine carries in the 30-27 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

If the Vikings want to have a solid backup who can eventually start in place of Cousins, Mariota would be the solid choice.
