In an ideal world, Anthony Barr would remain with the Vikings on his next contract after eight seasons of service.

This isn’t an ideal world and Barr shouldn’t be part of the plans for Minnesota going forward.

Since he was drafted No. 9 overall in 2014, the linebacker has thrived. He went to four Pro Bowls in his first five seasons. He’s started 97 games for the Vikings with five interceptions, including three in 2021, eight forced fumbles, 37 tackles for loss, 42 QB hits and 484 total tackles.

That’s a solid career he can be proud of.

Recent outputs for the 29-year-old haven’t been as bright, especially with injuries limiting his appearances. He’s played 12 games over two years.

Barr should be able to go out and find a lucrative contract. However, the Vikings won’t be able to justify the price tag for a player who will be turning 30 this spring. His injury record makes him a risk and Minnesota can’t afford to take it.
