Matt Nagy released a statement after being let go by the Chicago Bears on Monday.

After four years at the helm, the Matt Nagy era of Chicago Bears football has come to an end.

Nagy was fired on Black Monday after the 2021 Bears finished the season at 6-11. While this was his first losing season in Chicago, he only had one winning season on the job. Nagy went 12-4 in 2017 and won the NFC North. However, he went 8-8 the next two years. This put him on the hot seat entering this season. He leaves Chicago with a 34-31 record and an 0-2 mark in the playoffs.

“To the Chicago Bears organization – It was an honor to serve as your Head Coach over the past four seasons. I want to thank Ted Phillips, George H. McCaskey and Mrs. Virginia McCaskey for the opportunity to lead one of the game’s most storied franchises. It’s four years I’ll always remember.”

Since Nagy will not turn 44-years-old until April, he will presumably get another chance to be an NFL head coach down the line. He may need a few years to rehab his image, but keep in mind how well-connected he was prior to getting the Bears gig. Nagy had been on Andy Reid’s staff since 2008 with the Philadelphia Eagles and then followed him to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013.

Ultimately, Nagy fell victim to what many of his Chicago predecessors did before him. A primary reason why the Bears have struggled to win consistently throughout the Super Bowl era has been quarterback play. Their best passer since Sid Luckman was Jay Culter. While Justin Fields offers a ton of promise, he is only entering his second year in the league out of Ohio State. He is very raw.

Whatever staff Nagy lands on will benefit from his head-coaching experiences with the Bears.
