Sonny Gray – Starting Pitcher

The Atlanta Braves are in pretty good shape at starting pitcher, but they could use one more arm in case Mike Soroka takes more time than expected to return to the rotation. Max Fried, Charlie Morton and Ian Anderson are a pretty good top three, but after that there are question marks.

The Braves don’t need to spend the farm to get someone like Luis Castillo, but they could stick to the Cincinnati Reds and add Sonny Gray to the rotation.

Gray has improved dramatically since leaving New York. Still, his ERA ballooned to over 4.00 for the first time since leaving the Yankees last season. He was a Cy Young candidate in 2019 (eventually finished 7th), and he was productive again in 2020, pitching to a 3.70 ERA and 1.214 WHIP. The Braves would bet on last year being an outlier.

Gray would add to the Braves’ rotation depth behind Morton, Fried and Anderson, and likely won’t cost as much as many starters with his numbers in free agency.
