Football has an interesting legacy in Arkansas. Razorbacks football goes all the way back to the late 1800s. They won a couple of conference championships prior to Frank Broyles getting there in 1958, but Broyles was able to take Arkansas to heights nobody thought possible. The Razorbacks actually won it all in 1964. They beat Nebraska in the Cottom Bowl to take home a national championship. He went undefeated and untied that year, the last Arkansas team to do that.

Broyles won the Southwest Conference seven times in his tenure at Arkansas. He also led one of the fiercest rivalries in college football. Back then, it was Arkansas and Texas that had a fierce hatred for each other. Broyles and Darrell K. Royal were two of the best coaches in the sport. They went head to head on a yearly basis, and many times it was the win or the loss that would make or break the season.

At one point, Texas and Arkansas played in what’s considered the “Game of the Century” in 1969. They went into the matchup number 1 and number 2 in the nation, and they had one of the best games in the history of the game. Texas came out on top, but Broyles still coached a great game.

Broyles led the best era of Arkansas football. The team was a winner every single year. Outside of his first year with the program, the Razorbacks finished every season under Broyles over .500. There was no massive rebuild under Broyles. He made sure this team was relevant for two full decades. They haven’t been anything like that since.
