The Miami Dolphins plan on Tua Tagovailoa being their starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.

The Miami Dolphins, despite overcoming a 1-7 start to go 9-8 on the 2021 season, decided to fire head coach Brian Flores after three years on the job. Now, they are one of eight teams in the search for a new sideline boss. But just how does that affect quarterback Tua Tagovailoa?

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Dolphins expect Tagovailoa to be their starting quarterback for the 2022 season “barring some sort of unforeseen circumstance.” In regards to the search for a head coach, a source told Rapoport that they hope to find a candidate who “believes” in Tagovailoa.

So, how does the future of the Dolphins look with Tagovailoa as the de facto starter in 2022?

What does Dolphins’ future look like with Tua Tagovailoa as QB1?

With a new head coach coming to Miami, that means that Tagovailoa will be on his third offensive coordinator in three years. That is not an ideal circumstance for the quarterback, who had Chan Gailey as his OC in 2020 and Eric Studesville and George Godsey as co-coordinators in 2021.

For Miami, they need to get this search done the right way. Ideally, they need to hire a coach that not only wants to get the most out of Tagovailoa, but also one who can bring in the perfect offensive scheme that will help the signal-caller thrive in his third year.

One name that does make sense for the Dolphins is Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. He not only helped develop Josh Allen into one of the top quarterbacks in the league, but he was also Tagovailoa’s offensive coordinator and position coach at Alabama during his freshman season (2017).

The Dolphins have already requested to interview him for the job. It will remain to be seen if Miami will have him at the top of their list of preferred candidates, or if he will get hired by one of the seven other teams in need of a head coach.

Additionally, the Dolphins need to give him Tagovailoa as much help as possible in 2022. Whether that is giving him more pass-catchers to pair alongside Jaylen Waddle, or improving what is a shaky offensive line.

If the Dolphins want Tagovailoa to succeed, they need to have a great offseason, from head coaching hire to player transactions.
